Using Respondus LockDown Browser with Canvas

Respondus LockDown Browser is a secure browser used for taking online quizzes and exams in Canvas. It prevents the user from copying, printing, opening new tabs, or accessing other applications. Follow guide below to learn how to enable the LockDown Browser.

Instructors

Require LockDown Browser for an assessment

Step 1

In Canvas, open your course and click LockDown Browser in the navigation panel.

Step 2

Click the drop-down arrow to the left of the assessment name.

Step 3

Click Settings.

Step 4

Under LockDown Browser Settings, select Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this exam.

Step 5

Click Save and Close.

Upload a test or quiz using Respondus (test builder software)

Step 1

Ensure you have the latest version of Respondus with updated licensing (Canvas > Help > Faculty Resources > Downloads).

Step 2

Open Respondus, then click Open to select your test file.

Step 3

Go to the Preview & Publish tab.

Step 4

Click Publish to Canvas, then run the Publish Wizard.

Step 5

Follow the prompts to configure the server, select your course, and publish the quiz or question bank.

Students

Windows and macOS

Step 1

Log in to Canvas at canvas.wayne.edu.

Step 2

Click Help on the Global Navigation Panel, then choose Students: Links and Downloads.

Step 3

Scroll to Downloads and click Respondus LockDown Browser.

Step 4

On the Respondus page, review the License Agreement and click Install Now.

Step 5

The browser icon will appear on your desktop. Use this to log in to Canvas and begin exams.

Chromebook

Remove any previous LockDown Browser version and clear your cache and cookies before installing. Keep your Chromebook updated to the latest version.

Step 1

Follow the same download steps listed above for Windows/macOS.

Step 2

On the Respondus page, complete the Chromebook installation prompts.

Step 3

Navigate to your Canvas exam and click Start Quiz to launch the LockDown Browser.
