How to enable and configure the firewall on macOS X

Follow the steps below to make changes to the Mac OS X firewall.

Step 1

Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu in the upper left corner of the display.

Step 2

Click Sharing in the System Preferences window.

Step 3

Click the Firewall button.

Step 4

If window states Firewall Off then click the Start button to start the firewall.

Step 5

To add a service:

  • Click New.
  • Choose the application's name (or Other) from the Port Name dropdown menu.
  • Enter the TCP port(s) in TCP Port Number(s) and/or UDP port(s) in UDP Port Number(s).
  • Enter the application or service in the Description field if it is present.
  • Click OK.
Step 6

Leaving the System Preferences window open, test the application to make sure the port is working correctly.

Step 7

When you are sure the application is working correctly, choose Quit from the System Preferences menu.
