Connecting to the WI-FI with WSU-SECURE and WSI-PUBLIC

Wayne State University offers Wi-Fi in all campus buildings and in select outdoor areas.

WSU-SECURE

The main Wi-Fi network for all students, faculty, and staff. This secure network encrypts your data and requires your AccessID and password to connect. WSU-SECURE is compatible with most modern phones, tablets and computers, including devices running Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android. Log in with your Wayne State AccessID and password and accept the security certificate if prompted.

WSU-PUBLIC

Guest network for visitors that does not require authentication.

WSU-LIMITED

Designed for internet-capable devices (e.g., smart TVs, gaming consoles) that cannot authenticate to WSU-SECURE. A device exception request and registration are required.

Tips for improved connectivity

  • Turn your device Wi-Fi off and then back on to reconnect to the closest access point and receive a stronger signal.
  • Temporarily disable cellular data to avoid signal conflict.
  • Forget any WSU Wi-Fi networks you are not currently using on your device to ensure connection to the correct network.
  • Reconfigure WSU-SECURE if you've changed your password.
  • Use a wired connection, when possible, for stability.
  • Do not use personal routers, hotspots, or wireless printers.
  • Keep your device operating system and drivers up to date.
  • Test on multiple devices to rule out device-specific issues.
  • Disable Power Save Polling (PSP) for improved performance.
     

Connect to WSU-SECURE Wi-Fi


Windows

Step 1

Click the Wireless Network icon in the bottom-right corner.

Step 2

Click WSU-SECURE.

Step 3

Enter your WSU AccessID and password.

Step 4

Click Connect.

macOS

Step 1

Open the System Settings application and click Wi-Fi.

Step 2

Click WSU-SECURE and log in with your AccessID and password.

Step 3

You will be prompted to accept a security certificate from Wayne State. Click Accept. You may have to enter your computer password to do this.

Chrome OS (Chromebooks)

Click the Wi-Fi icon and then click WSU-SECURE.

You may be prompted to complete additional settings to connect. Use the information belolw to compelte this step.

EAP Method: PEAP.

Phase 2: MSCHAPV2.

Leave Domain Suffix blank.

Log in with your AccessID and password.

iOS

Step 1

Open the Settings app and click Wi-Fi.

Step 2

Select the WSU-SECURE network and log in with your AccessID and password.

Step 3

Click Join to connect. You may be prompted to accept a security certificate. Click Accept.

Step 4

If you experience issues connecting, go to Settings>General>Profiles. Delete the WSU-SECURE profile and reconnect using the standard steps.
 

Android

Step 1

Go to device settings and click Wi-Fi.

Step 2

Click WSU-SECURE and log in with your AccessID and passwsord to connect. Additional settings may be required. Use the information below to complete the setup.

  • EAP Method: PEAP
  • Phase 2 Auth: MSCHAPV2
  • CA Certificate: Do not validate
  • Domain: wayne.edu
Step 3

Click Connect.

On a shared laptop

Follow the steps below to connect to WSU-SECURE on a shared computer to prevent other users from connecting with your credentials.

Step 1

Open the Control Panel.

Step 2

Click Network and Sharing Center.

Step 3

Click Manage Wireless Networks.

Step 4

Click WSU-SECURE network properties.

Step 5

In the Security tab, uncheck Remember my Credentials.

Connect to WSU-PUBLIC

Step 1

Open the Wi-Fi settings on your device and click WSU-PUBLIC.

Step 2

Launch a web browser. The WSU-PUBLIC login page will automatically appear. If not, enter any URL to prompt the WSU-PUBLIC login page. If you use Google Chrome, you will need to try to access a different website to trigger the agreement page.

Step 3

Review the terms of use and click Login.

Step 4

Click Take me to the internet to be connected.

What should I do if I have trouble connecting to WSU-SECURE?

If you have changed your AccessID password recently, update your network settings with your new password. You may need to forget the WSU-SECURE network to prompt the login page to update your password.

Where is WSU-PUBLIC available?


WSU-PUBLIC is a Wi-Fi network designed for Wayne State University guests and visitors. WSU-PUBLIC is available anywhere Wi-Fi is available on Wayne State campuses and does not require login credentials to access.


What restrictions are placed on WSU-PUBLIC?

  • Outbound traffic only (no unsolicited inbound traffic)
  • Rate-limited to 2 Mbps down/384 kbps up per IP
  • Permitted outbound traffic includes
    • TCP/22, TCP/80/443, TCP/143/993, TCP/110/995, TCP/465/587
    • UDP 500
    • ESP & AH (IPSec protocols)

What wireless network should I use for my device?

Students, faculty, and staff should always use WSU-SECURE first. WSU-LIMITED is required for the following types of devices.

  • Nintendo Switch, Xbox, PlayStation
  • Smart TVs, Roku, Chromecast, TiVo
  • Blu-ray players and other streaming devices
