Your Wayne State University AccessID provides access to essential university services including Academica, Canvas, email, and other university resources. This guide covers everything you need to know about managing your AccessID and password.
Change password (requires current password)
Step 1
Go to a.wayne.edu and log in with your AccessID and current password.
Step 2
Click the person icon in the upper-right corner and then click Account Management.
Step 3
In the Account Management menu on the left-hand side, click Change Your Password under Security.
Step 4
Fill in the text entry boxes with the following information.
- Your current password: The password you use now.
- Choose a new password: Desired new password.
- Verify new password: Desired new password.
Step 5
Click Submit.
Reset password (does not require current passwsord)
Users can reset their AccessID password by using the Forgot your AccessID or password on the Wayne State login page. Requirements vary by role.
- Student: Must have a recovery email address saved and verified.
- Employee: Must meet student requirements and correctly enter the last four digits of social security number.
- High risk employees (based on data access): Must meet all above requirements and be connected to the campus network.
Step 1
Go to login.wayne.eduand click Forgot your AccessID password?
Step 2
Enter your AccessID of PID (OneCard) and click Submit.
Step 3
Enter and verify your new password and click Submit.
Set up a recovery email address
Step 1
Go to a.wayne.edu and log in with your AccessID and password.
Step 2
Click the person icon in the top right-hand corner and then click Account Management.
Step 3
Click Recovery Email Address.
Step 4
Fill out the prompt and click Save.

Step 5
Check your external email for a verification message from no-reply@wayne.edu. Until the address is verified, you will be prompted to verify it every tenth login.

Step 6
Click the verification link to complete setup.

Step 7
Clicking on the link in the verification email will take you to a verification page. If you are not logged in, you will be prompted to do so and then the verification page will either display a confirmation or appropriate error message.

Requirements
- Valid addresses may contain letters, numbers and the following symbols: # $ % & ' * \ - + \ / = ? ^ _ ` { | } ~
- Address cannot contain consecutive periods
- Address cannot be hosted by Wayne State University (@wayne.edu, @med.wayne.edu, @wdetfm.org)
- Recommended to use trusted email providers like Google Gmail, Comcast, etc.
Sync updated password on Wayne State devices
After changing your AccessID password, you may need to force a sync on your Wayne State computer or other managed device to update the device login credentials to match your new AccessID password.
macOS
Follow the steps below to sync your password. If you are unable to log in to your device with your updated AccessID password or have forgotten the previous password, try logging in with your other recent passwords. If that does not work, call the Help Desk at 313-577-4357 to submit a ticket with your local tech. If you are remote, you may need to bring the computer to campus.

Click the key icon in the Mac menu bar

Click Sign Out

Step 3
When prompted, sign in with your new AccessID password. If the Sign into AD.WAYNE.EDU prompt does not appear automatically, click the key icon again and click Sign In.

Step 4
In the next window, enter your new AcccessID password as the Active Directory password.

Step 5
Enter your Mac login password (the password you used to unlock your computer).
Step 6
Click Sync Password.
Step 7
Click OK.

Windows
Connect to the Wayne State network and log in as usual. Connecting to the network will force the sync.
Connect to Wayne State Wi-Fi after a password change
You may connect to WSU-SECURE as normal after changing your AccessID password. You may need to log in to Academica and log back out to trigger the password update.

Why can I log into Academica but not Canvas or Wayne Connect email?
There are several possibilities.
- Applicants do not have access to Wayne Connect or Canvas. Wayne Connect access is granted upon acceptance; Canvas access is granted within 24 hours of class registration
- You may have recently changed your password. Academica accepts your old password until you log in with your new password, but other services require the new password immediately
- There may be a browser issue. Clear your cache and cookies and try again
How long does it take for a password change to take effect?
It may take up to 30 minutes for the password change to take effect throughout the system.
What should I do if the automatic password reset tool doesn't work?
Call the C&IT Help Desk during regular business hours at 313-577-4357.
How often should I change my password?
University-owned machine users are required to change passwords regularly. For general security, it's recommended to change passwords at least every six months.
Can I use my Wayne State email address as a recovery email?
No, recovery email addresses cannot be hosted by Wayne State University (@wayne.edu, @med.wayne.edu, @wdetfm.org). Use an external email provider instead.
How do I find my WSU AccessID if I've lost it?
Use the WSU online directory to search by name or email or call the C&IT Help Desk at 313-577-4357.
